School Sister of Notre Dame Marylita Friia, a former principal of Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, died Feb. 11. She was 90.

Born in Baltimore as Lita Serena, Sister Marylita grew up in St. Ambrose Parish in Park Heights. After attending the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore and she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1954 at the end of her sophomore year of what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore.

She graduated from Notre Dame of Maryland in June 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, later earning a master’s degree in physics in 1969 from Notre Dame University, Indiana, and a master’s degree in religious education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1980. 

Sister Marylita served as a math and science teacher in high schools as well as in administration at Archbishop Keough High School, Baltimore, where she was principal.  

She tutored prisoners at Jessup Correctional Institution to aid them in acquiring a GED certificate equivalent to a high school diploma.  Her math skills enabled her work as a medical claims coordinator for her religious community.
