Sulpician Father Michael Barré dies at 80

A funeral Mass for Sulpician Father Michael L. Barré was offered Oct. 2 at Our Lady of the Angels in Catonsville. Father Barré died Sept. 25. He was 80.

Father Barré earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College in St. Mary, Ky., before earning degrees from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Roland Park. He was ordained for the Diocese of Memphis on May 23, 1970, and admitted to the Society of St. Sulpice in 1974. He also earned a doctorate in near eastern studies from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Father Barré served on the faculty of St. Mary’s Seminary and University from 1992 to 2013. He also assisted at Sacred Heart in Glyndon. Elsewhere, he served on the faculty of St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, Calif., and was a former president of the Catholic Biblical Association and an editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly.
