Melissa Hester, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, was offered Nov. 25 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Dunmore, Pa. Sister Melissa died Nov. 20. She was 101. Born in Richmond, Va., and given the name Anne, Sister Melissa entered the IHM religious congregation on Sept. 8, 1941, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1944, and final profession of her vows on Aug. 2, 1947. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music/elementary education, and a master’s degree in elementary education/creative drama, both from what is now Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. Sister Melissa served as a teacher at St. Rita School in Dundalk (1959-60). Elsewhere, she ministered in Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina, West Virginia and the Archdiocese of Washington.
