A funeral Mass was offered Oct. 25 for Sister Mary Raphael Collazo at the Villa St. Michael Chapel in Emmitsburg. Sister Mary Raphael, who gave 66 years as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, died Oct. 21 at age 87.

All Souls Day and the month of November are special times for remembering the dead. This installment of Names and Numbers is dedicated to some of the lay contributors to the Archdiocese of Baltimore who died in the last year.

While nearly 40 K-8 schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore include a preschool, for a handful of parishes the school day consists only of that level, among them St. Al’s Preschool.

On All Souls Day, a day when Catholics and those of other Christian denominations pray for the dead, religious and civic leaders from around Baltimore gathered at the Weinberg Park Heights Jewish Community Center in Baltimore Nov. 2 to remember the 11 people slain at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh nearly one week earlier.

“People want to have an opportunity to honor … and bury their child,” said Father Carrion, who added that the ministry helps to build community among those experiencing loss.

The first Olive Mass held in Baltimore drew those who serve in the food industry Oct. 29 for a liturgy, panel discussion, networking and – of course – food.

Father John “Jack” Lombardi has led dozens of lengthy walking pilgrimages in Maryland and abroad, most promoting religious liberty. In response to the clergy abuse crisis, the Hancock-based pastor will lead a 50-mile “Pilgrimage for the Priesthood, in Penance and Prayer,” originating in Emmitsburg Nov. 9 and concluding in Baltimore Nov. 11.

“Our goal is to get younger families involved in the church,” said Laurie Kaplan, one of the family ministry coordinators. “There’s just so many families with young kids – it’s just nice to bring them into the faith.”
