Movie Review: ‘Scary Movie’ June 11, 2026By John Mulderig OSV News Filed Under: Movie & Television Reviews NEW YORK (OSV News) – A torrent of degraded sexual jokes overwhelms the few successful one-liners in “Scary Movie” (Paramount), a slipshod send-up of recent horror films and various other aspects of pop culture. Modeled most closely on the “Scream” franchise, the plot — such as it is — of this sixth installment in a series that kicked off in 2000 has a masked, knife-wielding killer on the loose. His principal targets are sisters Sara (Olivia Rose Keegan) and Tuesday (Savannah Lee Nassif) Campbell as well as their mom, Cindy (Anna Faris). Uncovering the predator’s identity eventually becomes the object of most of the remainder of an ensemble cast that also includes two of the script’s six co-writers, brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans, and Regina Hall. The siblings play, respectively, an aging stoner and a homosexual who likes to dress up as a cowboy. Hall’s character is based on that of Olivia Spencer in “Ma.” Under the direction of Michael Tiddes the proceedings are as disorganized as they are distasteful. A scene in which Shawn Wayans’ character announces that he’s been cured of his inclination toward men in front of an initially enthusiastic but increasingly doubtful congregation of churchgoers is among the many low points in this frighteningly bad trip through the gutter. The film contains constant vulgar humor, including some revolting sight gags, frivolously treated drug use, a few profanities, about a dozen milder oaths, pervasive rough, crude and crass language and an obscene gesture. The OSV News classification is O — morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association rating is R — restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
