Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, former superintendent of Maryland Public Schools for 20 years, will serve as the chairwoman of a search committee that will select a new superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Gregory Farno, archdiocesan chancellor of education, announced the appointment in an Oct. 15 letter.

“Dr. Grasmick is a distinguished leader in the field of education, with a remarkable career dedicated to advancing innovative education and leadership programs,” Farno wrote. “Her extensive experience as the State Superintendent of Maryland Public Schools for 20 years, her advocacy for students and her impact on education policy make her an exceptional choice to lead the search committee.”

Farno said Grasmick’s leadership, “combined with her commitment to fostering inclusive and effective educational environments, will undoubtedly guide the committee in selecting a superintendent who will uphold the values and traditions of our Catholic faith that drive our students’ exceptional success.”

The committee will be supported by the executive search firm, Catholic Recruiter Associates.

Dr. Donna Hargens, current superintendent of Catholic schools, announced her retirement in September. She will remain in the position through June 2025.

Grasmick served on the Blue Ribbon Committee on Catholic schools created by Cardinal Edwin F. O’Brien to craft a strategic plan for the Catholic school system nearly 15 years ago.

The committee members are:

  • Dr. Nancy Grasmick, board chairwoman, Presidential Scholar at Towson University, former Maryland School Superintendent
  • Monsignor Richard Hilgartner, pastor of St. Joseph, Cockeysville, and administrator of the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier, Hunt Valley
  • Sister Rita Michelle Proctor, superior general, Oblate Sisters of Providence
  • Mary Beth Lennon, president, Mercy High School, Baltimore
  • Holly Carnevale, partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP
  • Gregory Farno, chancellor of education, Archdiocese of Baltimore, former regional president of Truist Financial Corporation
Joann Pelipesky, Ex Officio, executive director of Human Resources, Archdiocese of Baltimore
