Father Thomas Ryan, a Pittsburgh native whose nearly 50 years of ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore was highlighted by chaplain posts at Archbishop Spalding High School and Johns Hopkins University, died of cancer Jan. 2. He was 79.

Jesuit Father Francis M. O’Connor, who served at St. Ignatius in Baltimore and was a former rector at what is now Loyola University Maryland, died Dec. 23. He was 99.

A funeral Mass for Redemptorist Father Andrew W. Carr was offered Dec. 11 at Sacred Heart of Jesus-Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Highlandtown. Father Carr, whose last assignment was at Sacred Heart of Jesus, died Dec. 7 at the St. John Neumann Community at Stella Maris in Timonium. He was 94.

Agnes Welch, a devout member of St. Edward Parish and former member of the Baltimore City Council from West Baltimore, died Dec. 26 at the age of 99 at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

De La Salle Christian Brother Edward Gallagher, who taught at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore from 1987-1992 and 1999-2008, died Dec. 17. He was 93.

Monsignor John Louis FitzGerald, a Baltimore native and former military chaplain who in 2003 established Apostleship of the Sea, a worldwide ministry for seafarers, for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, died Dec. 16. He was 82.

Monsignor William “Bill” Collins, a Baltimore native who served his home archdiocese for more than six decades, died of lung cancer Dec. 10 at St. Stephen’s Green. He was 88.

Sandra Day O’Connor, who was the first female U.S. Supreme Court justice, and often a crucial swing vote as a moderate, died Dec. 1 in Phoenix, per a statement from the high court. She was 93.

Pope Francis offered condolences to the parents of Indi Gregory and to the mourners at the funeral of “this precious child of God.”

Henry Kissinger, a former secretary of state who shaped U.S. foreign policy for decades, died Nov. 29 at his Connecticut home, his consulting firm announced. He was 100.
