Monsignor Arthur W. Bastress, longtime pastor of the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore, died July 16. He was 93 and had celebrated 69 years as a priest; he was looking forward to 70.

“She’s one of those people who gave her life to help the Hispanic community,” said Dr. Ivan Garcia, who worked alongside Pereda on the Hispanic Pastoral Council and served as its president.

“Ella es una de aquellas personas quien dio su vida para ayudar a la comunidad Hispana,” dijo Dr. Iván García, quien trabajó junto con Pereda en el Consejo Pastoral Hispano y sirvió como presidente.

Sister Maryla Farfour, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died June 20 in Scranton, Pa. She was 96.

Sister Aletta Dorothy Donahue, who taught at three schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, died June 11 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. She was 97.

Sister Anne Dorice DeFebbo, a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 48 years who taught nursing in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, died May 18, a few days before her 73rd birthday, at Assisi House in Aston, Pa.

Father Val Peter, who was executive director of Boys Town from 1985 to 2005, died June 30 at age 85. No cause of death was given.

School Sister of Notre Dame Carmen Marie D’Adamio, a Baltimore native who helped lead Catholic schools in Annapolis, Catonsville and Hagerstown, died March 22. She was 77.

A lifelong parishioner of Historic St. Francis Xavier in Baltimore and major influence in the education of black youths from pre-K to college, Gaddy was in his second stint on the staff at St. Frances Academy, where he had been in the class of 1983. 

“Carol’s work was grounded in relationships,” Puls said. “It was all about relationships.”
