Cecile Richards, former Planned Parenthood president and progressive activist, died Jan. 20 after a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. She was 67.

Though he left St. Joseph in Emmitsburg in 2010 for an assignment in Michigan, Vincentian Father Vincent J. O’Malley’s laughter still rings in the halls of the church, according to Elaine Ebaugh, assistant administrator at St. Joseph for 31 years.

Thomas Edward Little of Catonsville, a former pastoral associate for the Eastern Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and pastoral associate for evangelization and adult faith formation at Our Lady of the Fields in Millersville, was an energetic educator, an astute organizer and well-known for his love of singing, Notre Dame football and tropical shirts.

Jesuit Father Robert Braunreuther, who ministered to the homeless in Baltimore, died Jan. 6. The former Loyola University Maryland campus minister was 90.

Jesuit Father Eugene A. Nolan, who served as headmaster at Loyola Blakefield  in Towson and associate chaplain at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore, died Jan. 6 at the Scranton Jesuit Community. He was 84.

Mourners including all five living U.S. presidents attended the late President Jimmy Carter’s funeral Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral, the first time they have all been in public together since 2018, and an increasingly rare occurrence in an era of bitter partisanship.

An 11 a.m. funeral Mass for Franciscan Sister Marie Therese Carr will be offered Jan. 13 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Marie Therese died Jan. 8. She was 88 had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 67 years.

A funeral Mass for Franciscan Sister ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Marietta Culhane will be offered 11 a.m. Jan. 10 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Marietta died Jan. 6. She was 94 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 71 years. 

Italian Cardinal Angelo Amato, who served as secretary of the Vatican’s doctrinal office and then as head of the then-Congregation for Saints’ Causes, died in Rome Dec. 31 at the age of 86.

Olivia Hussey, known for her iconic on-screen portrayals of Mary and Mother Teresa, died Dec. 27 at age 73 at her California home, according to a statement released by her family the following day.
