A funeral Mass for Redemptorist Father Arthur Wendel was offered Aug. 5 at Holy Redeemer Church in New York. Father Wendel died July 26 at the St. John Neumann Community at Stella Maris in Timonium. He was 90.

Born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Father Wendel entered the Redemptorists in 1954, professing his perpetual vows in 1959, the same year he was ordained to the priesthood.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Father Wendel ministered at the St. John Neumann Residence from 2013 to 2023, often playing the organ and leading his brother Redemptorists in song. Elsewhere, he served in New York and Connecticut. He was active in AIDS ministry and was the founder of the Alphonsian Center for Spirituality Through the Arts in New York.

Father Wendel held a bachelor’s degree in history from St. John’s University in New York. He also held a master’s degree in U.S. history from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and took an additional baccalaureate degree in music at Manhattanville College.
