Sister Margaret Bauer, SSND, beloved former Frederick County teacher, dies at 104 March 12, 2024By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Feature, Local News, News, Obituaries A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Margaret J. Bauer will be offered March 15, 10 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Frederick on what would have been her 105th birthday. Sister Margaret, a beloved member of the community in Frederick, died March 9 at Stella Maris Nursing Home in Timonium. Sister Margaret, the last member of her order to reside in Frederick County, taught third grade for 17 years at St. John Regional Catholic School in Frederick. She also worked in pastoral care at St. John Parish for several years well into her 90s. In 2014, St. John parish renovated its former school and renamed it the Sister Margaret Bauer Evangelization Center. The parish uses it for formation and meetings. She told the Catholic Review at the time: “It really wasn’t about me. The whole thing was in honor of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for their leadership and service. I was just the lucky one here.” A New Jersey native, Sister Margaret entered the School Sisters in 1938. In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, she taught at St. Andrew, Blessed Sacrament and St. Matthew in Baltimore, and was principal of St. Joseph School in Midland. She also taught elsewhere in Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania. A viewing will be held March 15 at 9 a.m., followed by wake service at 9:30 a.m. and funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial at St. John’s Cemetery will follow the funeral.
