Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop Patrick J. Zurek of Amarillo, 77, and has appointed retired Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, 76, as apostolic administrator of the diocese until a new bishop is appointed and installed.

The presidents of the Italian, French, German and Polish bishops’ conferences issued a joint appeal calling for European unity in the face of continued global instability and to draw from the lessons of the past to prevent future catastrophes.

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, retired archbishop of New York, is the new co-chief chaplain of the New York Police Department, sharing the role with the Rev. A.R. Bernard of Brooklyn’s Christian Cultural Center, a nondenominational megachurch.

Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of Denver and named as his successor Bishop James R. Golka of Colorado Springs, Colo.

With his Feb. 6 installation, “he steps into a massive new role leading 2.5 million Catholics in New York,” but “he will be a man grounded by his love of God, the poor and the people he serves,” it said.
