The film is less a profile of the titular saint, Padre Pio, played passionately by Shia LaBeouf, than a portrait of San Giovanni Rotondo, the Apulian town of his Capuchin monastery, in the period immediately after World War I.

Director Rob Savage’s feature-length screen version of horror-meister Stephen King’s yarn arrives as the above-average chiller “The Boogeyman” (20th Century).

“Mrs. Davis” is not anti-religious in any sense. But it’s clear that showrunner and co-writer Tara Hernandez – along with her principal script collaborator, Damon Lindelof – is out to break boundaries and flout convention in her presentation of faith as well as in her approach to storytelling.

With age comes wisdom, so we’re told. But apparently that doesn’t apply to the quartet of AARP-eligible friends at the core of the romantic comedy sequel “Book Club: The Next Chapter” (Focus).

Amnesia is a hoary device for inserting drama into a fictional tale, and the writers of the hard-edged but less than convincing espionage yarn “Citadel” rely heavily on it.

Although the film “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is a generally upbeat affair, such caution is not entirely unwarranted.

The realistic-feeling, albeit not fact-based, adventures the screenplay chronicles are not for the fainthearted — nor for those who object to soldierly swearing.
