Viewers allergic to cats, whether physically or by temperament, should steer clear of the colorful but cutesy musical fantasy “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” (Universal). So, too, should cynics, curmudgeons and anyone given to even occasional grumpiness.

Movie Review: ‘Light of the World’

“Light of the World” (Salvation Poem Project), an animated recounting of the Gospel story, provides an excellent vehicle for delivering its fundamental message in an easily absorbed manner. Although the film includes material that would be too frightening for tots, more mature youngsters are its appropriate target audience.

Both the upstairs and downstairs inhabitants of the titular stately home get a splendid send-off in “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” (Focus). A couple of subplots interwoven into this third big-screen iteration of the franchise, however, suggest the abundant elegance it offers is best reserved for grown-ups.

Both the strengths and the problematic aspects of the animated adventure “Ne Zha II” (A24) are revealed by a look at two of its main characters: the figure of the title (voice of Crystal Lee) and his enemy by destiny but best friend by choice, Ao Bing (voice of Aleks Le).

Movie Review: ‘Honey Don’t!’

Moral squalor is the order of the day in the dark comedy “Honey Don’t!”. While clearly intended as an homage to film noir by director and co-writer (with Tricia Cooke) Ethan Coen, the rancid proceedings also borrow all too heavily from the sleazy world of 1960s and 1970s grindhouse fare.

Taken as a whole, the horror film “Weapons” (Warner Bros.) tends to be subtle in its approach to intriguing and unsettling viewers.

More than two decades later, the duo reprise their roles while screenwriter Jordan Weiss raises the stakes with further complications in “Freakier Friday” (Disney). While not a knee-slapper, the sequel is at least mostly wholesome.

Movie Review: ‘The Naked Gun’

For most of its running time, the intermittently amusing comedy “The Naked Gun” (Paramount), a sendup of the hardboiled cop genre, qualifies as a fun spoof that’s appropriate for most grown-ups. Yet its one sequence of utterly tasteless sexual sight gags will leave discerning viewers anything but entertained.

Now joined by co-director J.P. Sans, Perifel has crafted an equally enjoyable follow-up, “The Bad Guys 2” (Universal). While this second installment continues the ensemble’s conversion story, the script — on which the first movie’s writer, Etan Cohen, collaborated with Yoni Brenner — also includes enough potty-centric material to annoy at least some parents.
