I have seen the face of Christ

September 10, 2018
By Christopher Gunty
Filed Under: Amen, Amen Gunty Commentary, Commentary

Many years ago, I read an essay that pointed out that the church – whose head is Christ – must have a dual nature: like Jesus, both divine and human. If the church were not human, it would not be riddled with sinners and all that sin brings into our lives; but if the church were not divine, it could not have lasted two millennia, the argument went.

‘You are precious; I love you’

We cannot simply say, “Have a nice day,” to someone who is clinically depressed, and expect that to change his or her situation. But we can learn to identify warning signs (see box) and get help for those who are hurting.

By Emily Rosenthal Alster

Reading Archbishop Lori’s pastoral letter on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s principles of nonviolence prompted Paul McMullen to consider his actions – and inaction – on issues of race and discrimination.

Amen: Boring in eye of beholder

January 30, 2018
By Emily Rosenthal Alster
Filed Under: Amen, Commentary, Western Vicariate

When we choose to stay in our own little world, it’s not because we are hateful or uneducated or racist. Some like the hustle, bustle and skyline. I’ll take the calm, rolling hills and serenity.

Amen: Ecclesiastes and 1968

January 10, 2018
By Paul McMullen

The thin green line
