Brigitte Bardot made nearly 50 movies between 1952 and 1973, when she announced that she would make no more and turned to the cause of animal rights. Seven of those, all from the 1950s, received the C (Condemned) classification from the National Legion of Decency.

“Hamnet” (Focus) is a lyrical but emotionally wrenching drama, a film that is both too intense and too complicated for kids. Those of their elders equipped to take on this challenging riff on real-life events, however, will also be able to bring their religious formation to bear on the movie’s more problematic elements.

The year just past was, on the whole, a reasonably strong one for Hollywood. A number of quality films were released, though a high quotient of movies that excelled aesthetically were marred by problematic content when considered from a spiritual and/or moral point of view.

Movie Review: ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’

“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” (Sony) is the fourth installment in a splatter-stained franchise centered on zombies that reaches back to 2002. Not only does the film maintain its predecessors’ tradition of bloodletting, it also features a devil worshipping theme and abundant instances of gratuitous nudity.

As its title suggests, the survival drama “Greenland 2: Migration” (Lionsgate) sets the three main characters featured in its 2020 predecessor on another journey. Unfortunately, their odyssey through ruined cities and a war zone is far less interesting than their earlier expedition and eventually turns into a dull slog for viewers.

Movie Review: ‘Primate’

In the opening sequence of the horror film “Primate” (Paramount), a minor character has one of his eyes gouged out and his entire face ripped off his skull. That moment, unfortunately, typifies the excessive gore that mars this otherwise taut and cleverly tense chiller, preventing endorsement of it for any age group.

Considered from an artistic point of view, “Marty Supreme” (A24), a loosely fact-based mix of drama and comedy, is an undeniably accomplished film. Approached from a moral standpoint, however, its narrative turns out to be both unsettling and, ultimately, unacceptable.

The film traces the adventurous life of the biblical king (voice of Brandon Engman in youth, voice of Phil Wickham as an adult) from his anointing by the prophet Samuel (voiced by Brian Stivale) through his defeat of the giant Goliath (voice of Kamran Nikhad) and on to a climactic battle against the Amalekites. It also focuses on three of his most important relationships.
