A funeral Mass for Marianist Brother Michael John Galvin was offered Jan. 9 at the Assumption Chapel at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Brother Michael died Jan. 1. He was 81 and had spent 63 years in religious life.

Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori was the main celebrant Jan. 20 of the Mass at Life Fest, a new event at the 50th anniversary of the National March for Life in Washington, D.C.

A funeral Mass for Conventual Franciscan Brother Charles Raymond Madden was offered Jan. 19 at the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe in Libertyville, Ill. Brother Charles died Jan. 13. He was 83.

Sister M. Elsa Eckenrode of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Jan. 17 in Scranton, PA. She would have been 99 on Jan. 27.

While in Baltimore, Brother Brian was a teacher, coach, counselor and administrator. He was inducted into the Mount St. Joseph Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore held its annual “Faith in Baltimore” gathering Jan. 17 at Mercy High School, where it honored Annette March-Grier for her decades of caring for local citizens in need of grief support services.

Parishioners and guests of St. Bernardine Church in West Baltimore sang the hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at the beginning of a prayer service Jan. 16 at noon, during the parish’s 10th annual Peace Walk in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Monsignor Edward Michael Miller.

The site of the first seminary in the United States will be home to a new program for those discerning a vocation to the priesthood when a regional house of formation opens at St. Mary’s on Paca Street.
