While longtime Mercy Medical Center staffer Edna Jacurak’s official title is Collections Manager, she spends her spare time working on completely different types of collections.

Al Edwards and Pam Zusi, longtime supporters of Catholic education, were honored with the 2017 John McElroy Award Oct. 3 by the Friends of Catholic Education.
According to its mission statement, FOCE is “dedicated to providing a Catholic school education in Frederick County for all who seek it.” Since its founding in 1989, it has provided more than $5 million in financial assistance to Catholic schools and students in the county.
Edwards and Zusi have been a big part of that effort.

“When people ask for prayer, I follow up with a note,” Nadolny said. “I want to know how they are doing, and to keep me updated. I also invite them to join the prayer group.”

Feeding the hungry is work, but the approximately 14 volunteers (12 for lunch, two for breakfast) who keep Beans and Bread running into its fifth decade of service don’t see it that way.

When Anthony Zehyoue walks the halls of Loyola Blakefield or roams its football sidelines, he does so as an example of the universal church, mindful of the debt he owes to those who helped him get there.

“Holiness isn’t our work; it’s the work of the Holy Spirit in us,” Monsignor Baker explained. “Priests have got to be docile, to grace and to the Holy Spirit.
