Bon Secours Sister Mary Regina Flatley, who served as nurse and leader of the Bon Secours nursing community in Baltimore for more than 70 years, died Aug. 23 at Marian Hall in Marriottsville, the retirement home for the Sisters of Bon Secours, USA. She was 89.

A native of Philadelphia, she entered the Congregation of Bon Secours in 1951 and professed her final vows in 1959. She attended Bon Secours School of Nursing, graduated from Villanova University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and continued her studies at the University of Delaware, where she earned her master’s degree in education. She also received a certificate in spirituality and spiritual direction from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif..

After Sister Mary Regina worked as staff member and head nurse at Bon Secours Baltimore Hospital and St. Francis Country House in Darby, Pa., she served as vice president of mission and associate director at Bon Secours Baltimore Hospital. She was also vice president for mission at Bon Secours DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Va.

While serving as clinical director in the Bon Secours School of Nursing, Sister Mary Regina gained the affection of her students including Bon Secours Sister Elaine Davia, country leader of her religious order.

“She was a wise woman who gave me principles to live by early on that still help me today,” said Sister Elaine Davia according to an obituary provided by her order. “One principle was to trust in the Lord and the wisdom of others when caring for patients.”

Sister Mary Regina participated as an active member of boards of multiple Bon Secours facilities over the years.

She was president of the Bon Secours Baltimore Hospital board of trustees, as well as of the boards of Bon Secours St. Francis Xavier, Bon Secours St. Joseph Healthcare, and Bon Secours Health System 1986-90.

Before retiring in Venice, Fla. she performed in multiple national and international roles in her congregation, such as provincial councilor, formation director, USA centennial year coordinator, provincial of the Sisters of Bon Secours USA, and in 1999 was elected to the Congregational Leadership Team in Paris, France.

A funeral Mass was offered Sept. 1 at the Sisters of Bon Secours Chapel in Marriottsville.
