Xaverian Brother Daniel Conaghan dies at 84

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Brother Daniel entered the Xaverian Brothers in July 1957, receiving his religious name, Brother Rian. He was a teacher and chief financial officer of Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore 1978-86.

A funeral Mass was offered Sept. 10 for School Sister of Notre Dame Maria Natividad Aponte at Villa Assumpta in Towson. She died Sept. 2 at 99 after serving more than 70 years in Maryland, Pennsylvania and her native Puerto Rico.

Sister Judith Anne Schaum, leader in Baltimore Catholic schools, dies at 85

A funeral Mass was offered Sept. 12 for School Sister of Notre Dame Judith Schaum, a teacher and administrator at several schools in her native Baltimore who also served as a longtime assistant superintendent of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She died Sept. 4 at age 85.

Funeral Masses will be offered Sept. 11 and 14 for Conventual Franciscan Father Joseph Benicewicz, a Baltimore native and former president of Archbishop Curley High School In Baltimore. Father Benicewicz died unexpectedly Sept. 6 in Kensington, Conn. The 1978 graduate of Archbishop Curley was 64.

A funeral Mass will be offered  Sept. 11 for Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia Corda Marie Bergbauer, a former teacher at St. Stephen School in Bradshaw and The Catholic High School of Baltimore. The former superior general of the Sisters of St. Francis died Sept. 5 at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania.

A funeral Mass for Sister of Mercy Mary Ellen Brodie (formerly known as Sister Martin Marie) was offered Sept. 4 at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Baynesville. Sister Mary Ellen died Aug. 25. She was 91 and had been a Sister of Mercy for 72 years.

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Aug. 22 announced the death of Mercy Sister Theresa Kane, 87, who served in many roles during her 69 years of religious life, including being elected in 1978 as president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.
