The son of Ruth E. Whitfield, the oldest victim of the racially motivated mass shooting at a Buffalo, New York, grocery store, told a rally in Washington June 11 that the nation needs to “lower” its weapons and “replace the hate.”

The young organizers of Students Demand Action were the first of several groups to arrive in Washington in early June for a week of protests demanding that U.S. lawmakers pass restrictions on high-powered weapons such as the ones that have been used in mass shootings, including at schools.

After the U.S. Senate failed May 11 to advance a “radical” abortion bill, the chairmen of two U.S. bishops’ committees urged Congress “to stop pushing abortion as the solution to needs of women and young girls” and “embrace” public policy initiatives that protect “both mother and child.”
