Hired by Archbishop William D. Borders in 1979 as director of personnel services for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Kelly worked for 24 years at the Catholic Center in the field of human resources.

Carl Anderson told the Knights at the annual gathering that they gave more than $185 million dollars to charity last year, an $8 million increase from the previous year and one of the largest yearly increases in the organization’s history.

The opening Mass included 100 bishops and 200 priests, with approximately 2,200 Knights and their wives in attendance.

Jennifer Briemann, executive director of the Maryland Catholic Conference, said lawmakers and voters should be greatly concerned about House of Delegates Speaker Michael Busch’s plan to introduce legislation establishing a woman’s “right” to abortion via a Maryland Constitutional Amendment on the 2020 ballot.

“When you override nature itself,” Bishop Brennan added, “you don’t respect it.”

Leaders of the Baltimore Basilica are launching a plan to increase the hours the church is open, while simultaneously commissioning “urban missionaries” whose ministry will focus on developing relationships with people on the city’s streets.

Sister M. Francis Regis Vagt, who taught at St. Rita Elementary School in Baltimore from 1960-65, died July 28. She was 85.
