A funeral Mass for Conventual Franciscan Father Samuel Zebron was offered June 27 at St. Mark Church in Boynton Beach, Fla. The Baltimore native was 84 years old when he died June 19.

A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Amalia Menardi was offered June 19 in the Chapel of Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn. Sister Amalia died June 13 at age 99 at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton.

In the July 3 closing Mass for the Fortnight for Freedom, Archbishop William E. Lori called on Catholics to thank God for the gift of freedom and to pray that they “use this gift well and wisely.”

A funeral Mass for Sister Mary Beard, a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, was offered June 10 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. Sister Mary died June 7 at age 88, after giving 53 years to her vocation.

Sister Mary Alice Chineworth, a former superior general of the Baltimore-based Oblate Sisters of Providence who overcame racial discrimination in her pursuit of a religious vocation, died June 21. She was three weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

Archbishop Lori announces the retirement of Father Joseph Cosgrove and new assignments for several permanent deacons.

The archbishop called Bishop Madden “the whole package,” noting that his simplicity of dedication was inspiring.

“He was a preacher, but he was also a strategic thinker. He was always asking, ‘What does it take to do youth ministry well?’ and ‘What’s the vision here?’ ”

Father Ewing exhibited a demeanor of peace and joy as he processed down the center aisle of the cathedral toward what promises to be his greatest adventure, a lifetime as a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

“My favorite classes,” said Michael Wohlfarth, salutatorian at St. John’s Catholic Prep, “were the ones that gave me a taste of what I might want to do with my life.”
