Sister Mary Elizabeth Costello, I.H.M., taught in Baltimore June 29, 2021By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Local News, News, Obituaries Sister Mary Elizabeth Costello, a professed member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for nearly seven decades whose ministry in education brought her to the Archdiocese of Baltimore in the 1960s, died June 26 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 88. Formerly known as Sister M. St. Imelda, she was a native of Syracuse, N.Y. She made her final profession of vows in August 1955, and She earned a bachelor’s degree in education, and a master’s degree in middle school education, both from what was then Marywood College in Scranton. Sister Mary Elizabeth taught at the former St. Bernardine School in West Baltimore, 1964-66. She also taught at elementary schools in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. She also served as a school administrator in New York, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. From 2013 until her death, Sister Mary Elizabeth was a prayer minister at Most Holy Rosary Convent in Syracuse, and later at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa. Due to restrictions related to the coronavirus, a funeral Mass and graveside service are private.
