A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Amalia Menardi was offered June 19 in the Chapel of Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn. Sister Amalia died June 13 at age 99 at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton.

A funeral Mass for Sister Mary Beard, a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, was offered June 10 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. Sister Mary died June 7 at age 88, after giving 53 years to her vocation.

Sister Mary Alice Chineworth, a former superior general of the Baltimore-based Oblate Sisters of Providence who overcame racial discrimination in her pursuit of a religious vocation, died June 21. She was three weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

“He was a preacher, but he was also a strategic thinker. He was always asking, ‘What does it take to do youth ministry well?’ and ‘What’s the vision here?’ ”

A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Alvita Maguire was offered June 7 at Villa Assumpta in Baltimore. Sister Alvita died May 27; she was 94.

How admired was Bishop William C. Newman? Applause cascaded through the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland May 29, as the casket bearing his body was wheeled down its main aisle, toward his final resting place in its crypt.

Bishop William C. Newman, a native son whose diverse service to the Archdiocese of Baltimore included being a parish priest, superintendent of schools and auxiliary bishop, died May 20 at Mercy Ridge Retirement Community in Timonium.

Father Michael White remembered Cardinal Keeler as a “tornado” of nonstop work who considered it the “highest form of asceticism” to never waste a moment.

“There’s no more appropriate place for the cardinal to be buried than this place he truly, truly loved with all his heart,” said Father Gilbert Seitz.
