Funeral Masses will be offered Sept. 11 and 14 for Conventual Franciscan Father Joseph Benicewicz, a Baltimore native and former president of Archbishop Curley High School In Baltimore. Father Benicewicz died unexpectedly Sept. 6 in Kensington, Conn. The 1978 graduate of Archbishop Curley was 64.

Sister Corda Marie Bergbauer, former teacher at Catholic High, dies at 98

A funeral Mass will be offered  Sept. 11 for Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia Corda Marie Bergbauer, a former teacher at St. Stephen School in Bradshaw and The Catholic High School of Baltimore. The former superior general of the Sisters of St. Francis died Sept. 5 at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania. 

Mercy Sister Mary Ellen Brodie dies at 91

A funeral Mass for Sister of Mercy Mary Ellen Brodie (formerly known as Sister Martin Marie) was offered Sept. 4 at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Baynesville. Sister Mary Ellen died Aug. 25. She was 91 and had been a Sister of Mercy for 72 years.

Mercy Sister Theresa Kane dies at 87; she challenged pope in ’79 on women’s roles in church

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Aug. 22 announced the death of Mercy Sister Theresa Kane, 87, who served in many roles during her 69 years of religious life, including being elected in 1978 as president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.

Deacon Robert “Bob” Lehr, the first member of St. Ignatius parish in Hickory to become a permanent deacon and a key figure in the building of a new church in 2001, died Aug. 11 following a fall at his home in Forest Hill. He was 79.
