The Archdiocese of Baltimore celebrates more than 2,200 graduates from its 18 Catholic high schools, who were able to let down their guard – a bit – as COVID-19 restrictions eased.

The Review visited with some of the archdiocese’s 54 Distinctive Scholars. While activities and traditions were adjusted or abandoned because of COVID-19, they not only thrived, but they grew in empathy.

The last day of the school year is typically a joyous occasion, but for the students, faculty and staff of St. Pius X Montessori Catholic School and Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, that day was bittersweet.

The high school class of 2021 in the Archdiocese of Baltimore will include nearly 40 students whose education included the assistance of scholarships that began in, of all places, Minnesota.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore will recognize the 2021 Distinctive Scholars, the three top academic students from each of the 18 Catholic schools of the archdiocese, during a May 6 virtual event hosted by Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn.

“I know how difficult it can be for people with special needs to get the education they need,” Pawley said. “When I learned that most of the resource programs at Catholic schools cost an additional fee, I realized that it would be difficult for people with financial need.”
