Retired Bishop Anthony M. Pilla of Cleveland, who led initiatives to bring diverse communities together to overcome poverty, racism and social inequity, died Sept. 21 at age 88, the Diocese of Cleveland said.

Sister Laurine, who served as guidance counselor, 1972-73, and director of religious education, 1973-78, at St. Clement I, Lansdowne, died Sept. 6 at Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods in Indiana.

Bon Secours Sister Mary Regina Flatley, who served as nurse and leader of the Bon Secours nursing community in Baltimore for more than 70 years, died Aug. 23 at Marian Hall in Marriottsville.

A native of Czechoslovakia who fled persecution by that country’s communist regime and served in Minnesota for nearly 30 years before being appointed a bishop in the Czech Republic died Aug. 10 in California. Retired Bishop Peter Esterka was 85.

Sister Katherine Ann Durney, whose nursing career brought her to the Archdiocese of Baltimore, died July 23 at Marian Hall in Marriottsville, the retirement home for the Sisters of Bon Secours, USA. She was 97.

Sister Mary Brendan Conlon, a Cumberland native who served in her hometown, elsewhere in Appalachia, and in Central America, died July 16 at Nazareth Home-Clifton in Louisville, Ky. She was 93.

Gerald “Jerry” Michael Costello, a Catholic press veteran who was a reporter, columnist, book author and founding editor of three newspapers, died July 19 a five-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 90.

Jesuit Father James L. Connor, who held national leadership roles and began and ended his active priesthood at what is now Loyola University Maryland, died June 21 at Manresa Hall Jesuit Community in his hometown of Philadelphia.

Sister Mary Elizabeth Costello, a professed member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for nearly seven decades whose ministry in education brought her to the Archdiocese of Baltimore in the 1960s, died June 26 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 88.
