In “Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle,” Dr. Shannen Dee Williams provides the first full history of Black Catholic nuns in the United States. We speak with Dr. Williams about what inspired her to write this history and what she learned in her extensive research, which included a look at the Baltimore-based Oblate Sisters of Providence.

Dan Burke breaks down St. Teresa Avila’s timeless classic, “The Interior Castle,” that explains the seven levels of progress in the spiritual life from a doctor of the church.

Danielle Whren Johnson, a Loyola-Notre Dame librarian, said books that were checked out 51 years ago were recently returned in a bin at a public library and then forwarded to Loyola-Notre Dame Library.

Dr. Angela Alaimo O’Donnell, a writer, poet and professor at Fordham University in New York and one of the world’s foremost authorities on Flannery O’Connor, shares her insights on understanding O’Connor. O’Donnell is a former longtime professor at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore and a former parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi in Baltimore.
