Lou Baldwin, Catholic journalist for 35 years, dies at 86

Louis “Lou” Baldwin, a Catholic journalist and a gentleman known by generations of Philadelphia Catholics for his bylines for 35 years, died Oct. 18 in Philadelphia. He was 86.

Powell, who was the nation’s first Black secretary of state, as well as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and national security adviser, died early Oct. 18 of complications from COVID-19 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside of Washington, where he was being treated for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. He was 84.

A funeral Mass was offered Oct. 1 for Daughter of Charity Sister Elizabeth Ann Tonroe at the Basilica of St. Elizabeth Seton in Emmitsburg. Sister Elizabeth Ann, a former teacher and principal of several schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, died Sept. 27. She was 94.

Monsignor Charles Frederick Meisel, founding pastor of Church of the Nativity, dies at 96

Monsignor Charles Frederick Meisel, founding pastor of Church of the Nativity in Timonium and a mentor to upcoming priests, died Oct. 2 at Stella Maris. He was 96, and at the time of his death was the oldest living archdiocesan priest.

Donellan Jr., founding pastor of the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier in Hunt Valley and a respected leader in pastoral planning in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, died Sept. 24 at St. Martin’s Home for the Aged in Catonsville, surrounded by the Little Sisters of the Poor. He was 91.

Deacon James Westwater, a fixture at St. Isaac Jogues and in diaconal formation, dies at 85
