Catholic scholar recalls ministry, impact of late founder of Focus on the Family

In 2014, James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family and a longtime broadcaster, became one of the first evangelical Christian leaders invited to speak at the national March for Life, joining a group of speakers that in past years had been dominated by Catholic clergy and Catholic members of Congress.

A funeral service was held Aug. 23 for Daughter of Charity Sister Kathleen Shannon, a Baltimore native and math teacher. She died Aug. 20 at age 70 of lymphoma at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg.

Jesuit Father James Salmon, noted Loyola professor, dies at 100

Jesuit Father James F. Salmon, who served three stints as a science and theology professor at what is now Loyola University Maryland, died Aug. 17. Father Salmon, who also served as headmaster at Loyola Blakefield from 1973 to 1976, had turned 100 in July after serving 75 years as a priest.

Beginning in 1992, Sister Miriam served for 19 years as director of international programs at what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore. A former provincial leader for her religious community’s former St. Louis Province and a former superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Jefferson City, Miss., she held other assignments in in Missouri and Illinois.
