Archbishop William E. Lori will ordain six transitional deacons and two permanent deacons during a 10 a.m. Mass May 18 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland. Those ordained as transitional deacons are expected to later be ordained to the priesthood, while permanent deacons will remain deacons.

When Baltimore Auxiliary Bishop Adam J. Parker and Andrew Middleton, director of the archdiocesan Apostleship of the Sea, approached the stranded MV Dali at the site of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the bishop noticed that it looked like it was leaning, and wondered if that would be evident onboard the ship.

A funeral Mass was held May 1 for Brother James P. Eckert, who died April 27 of cancer of the esophagus. Brother James, who also went by Brother Campion, taught for more than 20 years and ministered to the impoverished in Western Maryland.

Ascension Saint Agnes hospital in southwest Baltimore said in a prepared statement that it experienced a “cyber security event” May 8 and that access to some of its systems have been affected.

Emma Ward, from St. Joseph School (Cockeysville), was named Archdiocesan Elementary School Teacher of the Year and Kimberly Burton, from Archbishop Curley High School, was named Archdiocesan High School Teacher of the Year. Phil Bressler, from Calvert Hall College High School, was named Independent Catholic High School Teacher of the Year.

Men were welcomed at the historically all-women university for the first time 1975 in the school’s Weekend College for adult undergraduate students and they were welcomed into graduate programs beginning in 1984, but the university did not go fully co-ed until this academic year.

A funeral Mass will be offered May 10, 10 a.m., at St. Joseph in Cockeysville for Jesuit Brother Darrell J. Burns. Brother Darrell, a former theater director and chaplain at Loyola Blakefield in Towson, died May 3. He was 79.

The bishops of Maryland issued a statement May 8 objecting to a November 2024 ballot measure in which Marylanders will be asked to enshrine abortion into the state Constitution.

“They revere the sacredness of human life,” Archbishop Lori told more than 200 people who gathered April 27 at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., for Guadalupe Radio Network’s benefit dinner that honored the Little Sisters of the Poor with its “Fishers of Men” award.
